Chicago Airfare

Your chances of finding cheap Chicago airfare will depend on several factors. This includes when you go there, and where you are coming from. Aside from these, other issues will affect the price.

When to Go to Chicago

The peak travel season is the summer (June to September). Major events occur at this time, so many tourists go there. If you want to get tickets, make sure you book early as they will be very much in demand.

The off season is from January to March. This is the best time to book flights. They are cheaper. Hotels are also more affordable. Keep in mind though, that it is cold during this time of the year in the city.

Chicago Airports

There are two airports in the city. Chicago O’Hare International is 17 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. It will take about 40 minutes to get there. Chicago Midway is 10 miles from downtown. You can get to the airports via buses, mass transit lines or regional trains.

The alternative airports are South Bend and Milwaukee, both 75 miles away. You might consider using these alternative airports, as the fares are cheaper here during peak season.

How to Find Cheap Chicago Airfare Online

There are many websites that offer this service. The way the sites work differ. Many present a list of the airports nearest to you. This will allow you to compare the fares easily. You may also specify other options.

For example, you can compare cost by flight only, flights + hotels, flights + car rentals etc. The departure time may also be stated. There are also websites that provide you choices of cheap flights to Chicago if you are coming from another country.

Make an Advanced Purchase

If it is US domestic travel, you can get more affordable airfare by buying 21 days in advance. However, this rule does not always apply if you are coming from a major hub (i.e., New York or L.A.).

If it is international travel, it is best to buy the tickets a month in advance. The chances of getting affordable airfare increase if you opt for the 90 day advance purchase.

The Arrival Date Matters

No matter where you are coming from, keep in mind the fares will be costlier on Fridays and weekends. Schedule the departure from your arrival in the middle of the week. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the cheapest.

Holidays and Other Dates

The holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.) are the busiest time of the year. Fare costs are also at their peak. If you cannot avoid going to Chicago during these dates, book the tickets as early as possible.

The time of day you buy the tickets does not affect the cost. But do keep in mind that airfares can change by date. If you see an affordable airfare, get it now as the price may change.

The factors cited above determine the cost of Chicago airfare. If you take them into consideration, you will be able to get the most affordable rates possible.
